Carol Hjulberg, Kindergarten General Studies Teacher, (BS in Nursery, Kindergarten, and Primary Ed., Univ. of Minn.; MA in Jewish Ed., Hebrew Union College; Cert. In Gifted Ed., Hamline Univ.), is beginning her 16th year at the Day School. Carol taught kindergarten for four years in a Minnesota public school system and has ten years experience teaching preschool, both at Adath’s Gan Shelanu and in secular settings. An avid learner, she has completed the course work for a master’s degree in Teacher Leadership at the University of Minnesota. Prior to coming to the Day School, she was the Religious School Director for a synagogue in Southern California. Carol continues to be active in synagogue programs through her role as a Team Leader and 5th grade teacher at a local synagogue religious school. Carol serves as a member of the board for two community organizations and as a representative to another. She has two grown children; one is a high school English teacher, and the other works in the field of quality control. Quiet reading times, usually spent in archaeology and physics, are frequently enriched with episodes of adventure and humor with her dog, Kivi. Winnie the Pooh is Carol’s favorite storybook character and her classroom, as well as her home, reflects her devotion.
Jenny Krzykwa, Kindergarten General Studies Teacher (BS in Elementary Ed., St. Cloud State Univ.), is beginning her fifth fabulous year on the kindergarten team. Prior to joining the school Jenny worked for several years at the Sabes JCC as a lead teacher for the HaBonim program and in many different positions for Camp Olami. Jenny enjoys attending workshops, classes and observing in other schools to gather new ideas and approaches to learning that she can then use in her own class. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with friends, playing games (including occasional bingo nights), traveling, being crafty, and continuing her study of sign language.
Leah Rusakov, Kindergarten General Studies Teacher (BA in Elementary Ed., Moscow State Univ.; Minn.K-6 teacher’s license) has been working with preschool and lower elementary school students in a few different countries for almost 10 years, but the beginning of the new school year is always exciting! This is her fifth year at the Minneapolis Jewish Day School.Having spent four years in Israel, she always brings that spirit and love of Israel and Hebrew into her teaching. In her spare time Leah likes rollerblading, camping, and down-hill skiing with her 2 daughters, Miriam and Adina. Miriam is a 4rd grader at the Day School and Adina is a freshman at university!
Barbara Taragan, Kindergarten Hebrew Teacher, (BA and teaching degree in Child Psychology and Elementary Ed., Univ. of Minn.; BA and teaching degree in English Literature from the Ben Gurion Univ.; MA in Jewish Studies from Gratz College), is beginning her 17th year at the Day School, including a sabbatical in 2005-06 in which she participated in the Senior Educators Program at the Melton Centre at the Hebrew University. Barbara lived in Israel for twenty-five years, where she taught English at the Eshel Hanasi High School. Since returning to the United States, Barbara has been teaching at the Day School and the Minneapolis Talmud Torah. She is the proud parent of three children-Maayan, Afek, and Yamit and proud Savta to Gal.
Julie Ziessman, Kindergarten Special Assignment/Admissions (BS in Elementary Ed., minor in Political Science, Univ. of Wisconsin.), is beginning her ninth year at HMJDS. Julie started her career at HMJDS teaching fifth grade and she has been a member of the Kindergarten Team for the past seven years. This year Julie is looking forward to continuing to provide instructional support to all three kindergarten classrooms. Her role on the Admissions Team includes working with Lower School students and families during the screening process, and facilitating HMJDS’s Taste of Kindergarten and Pre-School Story Time Express outreach programs. In her spare time, Julie likes to spend time with family and friends. She loves to travel, and has visited many places in the U.S. as well as Mexico, Honduras, Belize, Israel, Morocco, and Russia. Julie is the proud parent of HMJDS first grader Emily, and future HMJDS student Zoe!

Valerie Dorman, Grade 1-2 General Studies Teacher (BA in Economics, Brandeis University, MS in Elementary Education, Fordham University), is beginning her second year at the Day School. Prior to joining the Day School, Valerie taught at The Rodeph Sholom School in New York City. Valerie and her husband Scott are new to the Twin Cities and are enjoying exploring the area. In her free time, Valerie enjoys traveling, spending time with friends and family, cooking and trying new restaurants. Valerie is looking forward to a wonderful year.
Michelle Etzion, Grade 2 Hebrew Teacher, (BS, Univ. of West Los Angeles), is beginning her third year at the Day School. Having grown up as a child in Israel, Michelle has a solid knowledge of the Hebrew Language as well as Judaic Studies. Her teaching experience includes working at Los Angeles Unified School District, as well as teaching Hebrew at many supplemental Jewish schools in Connecticut. Michelle has also taught, and was the Director of Admissions at Maimonides Academy of Western Connecticut. Michelle has completed the courses for the Tal Am Hebrew/Judaics Program for both the second and third grades. Michelle has also participated in the Minneapolis Federation Education Bridge program in Israel in the past. Michelle is married and has a current fourth and sixth grader at the Day School. Having moved to Minnesota less than three years ago, her family is enjoying getting to know the Twin Cities even better. Michelle has traveled all over the country as well as around the world, and is an avid dancer.
Shelley Fogelson, Grade 1 Hebrew and Judaic Studies Teacher (BA in Psychology & Political Science, Leeds Univ.), is beginning her ninth year at the Day School. Shelley grew up and was educated in England. She spent 6 years in Israel and has been living in the United States since 1990. Shelley brings us extensive teaching experience, including participating in the development and pilot study of the Tal Am Hebrew/Judaics Program, which is currently used in grades one through three at HMJDS. She has also worked in early childhood education for six years in Israel, taught Jewish History and Hebrew in grades one through six for four years in Nashville, and taught first grade Hebrew for five years at the Solomon Schechter School in Atlanta. Shelley sees herself as a lifelong learner and this summer she attended a class at the University of Minnesota on Second Language Acquisition. In her free time, Shelley enjoys playing tennis, bike riding, knitting, and crocheting. Shelley continues to be a member of the Educational Leadership Team and serves as the Professional Development Coordinator for the faculty. She has two children attending college as well as a current sixth grader at the Day School.
Hanna Galili, Grade 1 and 2 Hebrew and Judaic Studies Teacher (Major included study in Hebrew literature and language, art, mathematics and physics; Early Age and Young Childhood Ed., Wingate Teacher’s College at the Wingate Institute; Certificate in Jewish Studies, Gratz College, working toward a M.A. in Jewish Studies), is beginning her ninth year at the Day School. Hanna has completed the courses for the Tal Am Hebrew/Judaics Program. She taught Hebrew and general studies for grade two at Mizphe Ramon Elementary and Hebrew in South African day schools. She served in the Israeli army for two years in between her studies leading to teaching. Hanna really loves teaching Hebrew to young children through creative movement and music. She enjoys travel, boating, and learning about different cultures and different learning styles.
Sheree Goldblatt, Grade 1-2 General Studies Teacher (BS with Distinction in Elementary Ed., Univ. of Minn.; MA in Curriculum & Instruction and ED.S. in Ed. Administration, University of St. Thomas), is returning for her eleventh year at HMJDS. Prior to joining the team at HMJDS, Sheree taught for four years in the public schools and at West Suburban Summer School for Gifted and Talented. She enjoys blending her exciting experiences of seventeen years in corporate and non-profit marketing and communications into her classroom teaching, including her work with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Sheree loves bringing to life her curiosity about other cultures, sharing with students her amazing adventures on all of the seven continents. As a life-long learner and with the hope of better serving her students, Sheree recently attended the JCES Soul of Education Summer Institute and continued her studies in brain-based related research.
Ann Hunegs, Grade 1-2 General Studies Teacher (BS in Elementary Ed., Univ. of Minn.), is starting her tenth year at the Day School, and has been involved in elementary education for over 30 years. Her teaching experience includes St. Louis Park classroom, Title One, early entrance assessment, private, and ESL tutoring, and substitute teaching. Ann has sat on the National Young Women’s Leadership Cabinet of UJA. A former Tychman Leadership Award winner, Ann currently serves on the Miriam Board of Minneapolis Hadassah, the steering committee for the Louis Herman Israel Experience Fund, and the Women’s Philanthropy Campaign Cabinet. Ann’s family was one of the Day School’s “pioneering” families, enrolling a child in its first class.
Karen Malka, Grade 1-2 General Studies Teacher (BA in Hebrew and Semitic Studies, Univ. of Wisc.; MA in Elementary Ed., Curriculum and Instruction, Univ. of St. Thomas; Minn. Teaching License K-6), is beginning her 13th year at the Day School. Her teaching experience includes Meadowbrook Elementary, Park Valley Catholic, and Hale School in Minneapolis. She has taught at Adath's Jeshurun's Gan Shelanu and Talmud Torah. Karen is fluent in Hebrew and she has a strong connection to Israel. She studied for a year at Hebrew University. in Jerusalem, and she taught English to Israeli children at a summer camp in Givat Olga. Karen likes being able to share Shabbat and other Jewish customs with children in the community. She loves taking part in helping each child reach their full potential. Karen has two daughters, both of whom attend the Day School. One is in 3rd grade and one is in Kindergarten.
Sue Norton, Grade 1-2 General Studies Teacher (BS in Elementary Ed., Univ. of Minn; over 70 graduate credits at Univ. of Minn.) is starting her eighth year at the Day School. Sue retired from the Robbinsdale School District, but found she missed her connection with children. Sue has lived in St. Louis Park for nearly 30 years with her husband and has three children and two basset hounds. She enjoys reading, walking around the lakes, trying new restaurants and hockey games. Sue has recently completed a class from Project Read as well as classes on differentiated instruction and using centers in the primary grades.
Susan Vlodaver, Grade 1-2 General StudiesTeacher (BA in Child Study, Tufts Univ.; coursework toward MA in Public Affairs, Univ. of Minn.), is beginning her third year on the 1-2 team and has been a parent in the school for the last eight years. Previously Susan taught for several years in early childhood programs in the Boston area. She also has studied child and family policy at the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs at the Univ. of Minn. and has worked as a policy analyst for the State of Minnesota. Susan enjoys reading, knitting, biking, and spending time with her family.
Nechamit Yaari, Grade 2 Hebrew and Judaic Studies Teacher (Graduate, Levinsky Teachers Seminar, Tel Aviv, Israel; Course work Hebrew University Jerusalem, Bible and Hebrew Literature, BS in Ed., Univ. of Wisc.), is entering her 12th year at the Day School. She is a highly qualified educator who brings a vast variety of knowledge and skill to the classroom. In addition to her work at the Day School, she is continuing her 35th year of teaching at the Minneapolis Talmud Torah. At Talmud Torah she has been an essential contributor to its curriculum development program. Nechamit has also been a member of the Talmud Torah’s Education Board and Education Committee. She has completed the course work for the Tal Am Hebrew/Judaics Program. Not only does she offer broad experience, she has been honored and recognized by Jewish community. Nechamit has been a recipient of the Vivian Mann Jewish Educator of the Year Award and the Grinspoon-Steinhardt Award for Excellence in Jewish Education. Nechamit, an Israeli native, served in the Israeli army for 2 years and then continued to teach 7th-8th grade in the Ha Harvah School, before moving to the United States. She has an enthusiastic approach to incorporating dance and music into the classroom, while teaching Customs & Ceremonies, Hebrew and Judiaca. Every year, Nechamit makes it a priority to take various classes on new teaching techniques and implements them in her classroom. In July, Nechamit attended "Project Etgar Summer training", at The Jewish Theological Seminary. She is the proud mother of three daughters whom all graduated with honors from the University of Wisconsin. Nechamit has a grandson and a set of twin grand-daughters. She is eagerly awaiting the arrival of another set of twin girls this fall.

Jeff Aronow, Grade 4 General Studies Teacher (BA, Liberal Arts, California State University, Northridge) brings more than ten years of experience teaching third and fifth grades and serving as a mentor teacher in public schools in southern California. With a background in theatre, Jeff has directed plays at the elementary level and he has served as a creative drama teacher at Steven Wise Day School in Los Angeles as well as at L.A. area religious schools. Jeff has also been a religious school teacher. Jeff and his wife Amy’s children Benjamin and Shira are in kindergarten here. While the Aronows are new to the area, and know that they will soon have to adjust to a cold climate, they are enjoying the warmth that the HMJDS community has offered in making them feel so welcomed in their new community.
Patti Baskin, Grade 4 General Studies Teacher, (BS in Elementary Ed., Kean College, Union NJ; MA in Special Ed., Univ. of St. Thomas), is beginning her 11th year teaching at the Day School. Patti previously taught in other area schools and on the east coast. She was also a Title One administrator and consultant, as well as a president of the Hennepin County Library Board and Executive Director of the Friends of the Minneapolis Public Library. She loves to read and travel (this summer to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin with the whole family and last summer to Cape Cod and Maine. Many of her personal experiences will add to the geography lessons on the regions her class studies. Patti truly values the caring community at the Day School. She enjoys taking walks with her dog, Teddy; but her first loves are her husband (the tall guy you see wandering around school), three daughters, their husbands and four beautiful grandchildren, Sammi, Ben, Julia and Charley.
Nathelie Benjamin, Grade 4 and 6 Hebrew Teacher, (BA in English Literature and Second Language Acquisition, Teacher’s Certificate, Haifa Univ.; Educational Social Coordinator degree, Oranim College, Israel), is beginning her third year at the Day School. She has taught in Israel for a number of years as an English teacher at lower and upper levels and at an adult school in Israel prior to moving to the US. She is very passionate about teaching. Nathelie joined the school three years ago and she will is taking on the responsiblity for the 3rd and 4th grade Education Bridge program.She has a first grader at the school. She loves Italian food and enjoys spending time with her two daughters.
Saleit Faleschini- New to the Day School, Saleit brings a rich background to her teaching of Hebrew. She received her B.A. from the Accademia Di Belle Arti in Florence, Italy. She served as a Drill Sergeant in the Israeli Army. She combines her love of children and art with a talent for languages including Hebrew, Italian, and English.
Elena Garner, Grades 3 and 4 Judaic Studies Teacher (BA, Hebrew letters, MAEd, University of Judaism; BA, Political Science and Journalism, MA, Liberal Studies (concentration in Jewish Studies), University of Memphis) is excited to begin her second year at HMJDS. She has worked in formal and informal education in both teaching and administrative capacities in Memphis, Los Angeles, St. Paul and Minneapolis. Elena has a strong connection to Israel. In addition to attending a variety of conferences for Jewish youth and lay leaders, she spent a year volunteering with the Jewish Agency for Israel in development towns. She likes to help students unlock the mysteries of the Hebrew language in order to study Torah and make it relevant to them. In her free time she enjoys reading, walking, and spending time with family and friends.
Roz Kaplan, Grade 3 General Studies Teacher (BS in Elementary Ed., Univ. of Minn.), is beginning her 12th year at the Day School. She has been working with kids for over 30 years as an educator. She and her husband have two wonderful daughters, two great sons-in-law and three precious grandchildren, Will, Jack and Leah (who was born at the beginning of the summer) One of her daughters is also a teacher in the Mounds View School District. Roz’s favorite pastimes are reading, walking around the lakes, knitting, craft projects, travel, and babysitting for her grandkids. She has enjoyed the experiences and friendships made over the last eleven years. She is looking forward to another great year!
Ilena Marron, Grade 4 General Studies Teacher (BA in Art History, Brandeis University, MS in Elementary Education, Fordham University), is beginning her seventh year at the Day School. She brings to the school four prior years of teaching experience including teaching in New York City public schools. Ilena is committed to creating a nurturing and caring environment for her students. Beyond technology education, Ilena enjoys reading and attending cultural events. Ilena looks forward to another wonderful year.
Cassandra Schimel, Grade 3 General Studies Teacher (BS in Elementary Ed., Minnesota State University, Mankato), is beginning her third year of teaching at the Day School. Cassie is getting married in October 2008 to JB Mott. Cassie enjoys teaching, learning, spending time with family and friends, traveling and being outdoors. Cassie is very excited to a part of the Heilicher Day School community.
Becka Steinberg, Grade 4 General Studies Teacher (Certificate in Elementary Education, Grinnell College, MAEd, Hamline University) is beginning her eighth year teaching 4th grade at the Day School. Becka is married to Dan and has almost-two year old twins, Andrew and Ryan. She is excited to be back for another great year. Her other hobbies include music, reading, spending time outdoors, and traveling.
Yefet Zadaka, Grades 3 and 4 Judaic Studies Teacher (Certificate of Teaching and Special Ed., Seminar HaKibbutzim, Israel; Certificate of Literature/Language, Levinsky College for Ed., Israel; Music Degree, Academy of Music, Univ. of Tel Aviv), is entering his 19th year of teaching at the Day School. He was an assistant principal in Israel and has taught preschool to adult-age classes for over 30 years in Israel and at the Minneapolis Talmud Torah. Yefet is a walking resource guide for the entire community in the area of Torah study, teaching students from schools and home. In addition to writing, producing, and directing the school’s annual Torah plays, he is an accomplished musician. Yefet plays the accordion and the cello. He brings music and Israeli dance to life for his students. He recently completed a Holocaust course in Israel and training for using the Tal Am Hebrew/Judaics Program. Yefet is also in the process of publishing a Hebrew curriculum book for elementary grades as a teachers’ resource guide. He is the “Abba” of a large family, to which he devotes much of his time and energy in directing them to become the Jewish leaders of tomorrow.

Jenna Budda, Grade 5 General Studies Teacher (BS in Elementary Education, minor in English, Univ. of Wisc.), will be starting her third year on the fifth grade team this year. Prior to joining the HMJDS community Jenna taught sixth grade in Chicago at the Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day School for four years, with a specific focus in middle school language arts. Prior to working in the Jewish Day School she taught in an inner city Chicago school. Currently Jenna lives in St. Louis Park with her husband; they welcomed a new member to their family this week! Peyton Shalom Budda was born early in the morning on Wednesday, September 3rd. Jenna enjoys reading, spending time with her family, biking, playing softball, camping and just about anything that will allow her to spend time outdoors. When she is indoors Jenna loves to cook and attempt new recipes, as well visit as many new and interesting restaurants as possible. She serves as Athletic Coordinator for intramural sports programming and as the Language Arts Curriculum Coordinator.
Danielle Conhaim-Bader, Grade 5 Hebrew Teacher (BA in Cultural Anthropology, Minor in Jewish Studies, Smith College; Undergraduate study at Haifa and Hebrew Universities; Graduate Fulbright Scholar at Hebrew Univ.) is beginning her third year at the Day School. Previously, Danielle directed an experiential Jewish educational program for refugees from the former Soviet Union at the Minneapolis Jewish Federation. She has taught Hebrew and Jewish studies at Temple Israel and Talmud Torah of Minneapolis. A student of many languages including Russian, Amharic, Arabic, and Spanish, Danielle has a great passion for bringing together people of different cultures. She enjoys spending time with her family, studying Torah, hiking, cooking, and listening to music.
Sean Herstein, Grade 5 Hebrew and Grade 6 Judaic Studies Teacher (BA in Jewish Studies and Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, Indiana University; MA in Jewish Education, Hebrew University of Jerusalem ), is beginning his first year of teaching at the Day School. Most recently the Jewish Education Director at the St. Paul JCC, he has taught at the Talmud Torah of St. Paul, the Twin Cities Jewish Middle School, and served as Shabbat Enrichment Program Director at Beth Jacob Congregation. He has also been a Rosh Aidah (Division Head) at Camp Ramah, Wisconsin. Sean has also studied traditional Jewish texts in the Pardes Educators Program at the Pardes Institute in Jerusalem while also earning an M.A. in Jewish Education from Hebrew University (Jerusalem). He also is a proud husband and father to two young daughters.
Mollie Karon, Grade 5 General Studies Teacher(BS in Elementary Education, minor in health education, Univ. Wisconsin-Madison) is starting her second year on the fifth grade team. She is looking forward to creating a welcoming environment within her classroom. She previously taught a 4th and 5th grade resource class in Chicago. When she is not at school, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, watching sports, attending dance and yoga classes, cooking, and running or walking around Lake Calhoun as often as the Minneapolis weather will permit.
Beverly Moore, Grade 6 General Studies Teacher (BA in Literature, minor in Biology/Mathematics, Franklin Pierce College, New Hampshire; MA in Literature, Western Ill. Univ.; MA in Gifted Ed., Univ. of St. Thomas; coursework towards MA in Judaic Studies, Gratz College), begins her sixth year at the Day School. Bev has been actively involved in Jewish education in the Twin Cities for the last 20 years, written curriculum, and taught grades K-12. She has also been involved with Minneapolis Federation Education Bridge for the last six years. Bev serves as the Head of the Science Department for the Day School. Additionally, Bev runs the High Holiday education program for grades K-8 at Beth Jacob Synagogue. She enjoys spending time with her husband, Marv, and their two Basset Hounds (Porthos and Penelope). Her hobbies are reading, traveling, astronomy, swimming, jazz, and movies. She also collects turtles.
Maia Poling, Grade 5 General Studies Teacher (BA, Communications, University of San Francisco; MA in Teaching, Lewis and Clark College-Portland, OR), brings a wide range of teaching experiences from Kindergarten through eighth grade. She has developed inter-disciplinary units while teaching migrant students and public school students in Portland. She has had a variety of teaching assignments at the San Francisco Day School which have included serving as an advisor for seventh and eighth graders and developing curriculum for this advising program. She has also been Director of the Day School Summberbridge program, providing enrichment opportunities for fifth and sixth graders.
Lynn Slobodien, Grade 6 General Studies Teacher (BS in history, Wesleyan University; MA in Education, UCLA) participated in seminars at the Bay Area Writing Collaborative and studied strategies for teaching writing to middle school students across the curriculum at the Bard Institute for Writing and Thinking. A course in teaching the Hebrew Bible used traditional Jewish study methods to understand Biblical passages and expand her strategies for helping students deepen their textual interpretations. Lynn’s extensive teaching experience at the Urban School of San Francisco, Thurgood Marshall Academic High School, and Sequoyah School has been at both the middle and high school levels.
Christine Yussen, Resource Teacher and 5th grade long-term substitute (MEd in Elementary Education, Univ. of Minn., BS in Foundations of Education, Univ. of Minn.) is beginning her fourth year at the Day School. Previously she has worked nearby in the Hopkins Public School District for four years. In Hopkins schools, Christine worked with special needs children as a learning resource teacher, reading tutor, and long-term substitute in first grade and ELL. She enjoys seeing students progress through the personalized, small group learning opportunities the Day School provides. This is Christine's second year as General Studies Curriculum Coordinator, and serving as a member of the leadership team. In this role she will lead efforts along with other members of the leadership team this year toward the school's second ISACS accreditidation. Christine is a native of the Twin Cities and enjoys spending time with family and friends, playing the trombone, being active around the city lakes, gardening, and traveling.

Sally Abrams, Grade 7 and 8 Hebrew Teacher (BA in nutrition and BA in Hebrew Language, University of Minnesota) left a career as a nutritionist and health educator to return to college and learn Hebrew. She taught Hebrew and worked with the Education Bridge program at the Twin Cities Jewish Middle School for seven years before joining the Day School faculty in 2007. For the last several years Sally has been the chair of the Jewish Community Relations Council's Israel advocacy speakers bureau. She loves visiting Israel and tries to get there once a year. Sally and her husband have four kids—three in college this year!
Elly Becker, Grade 7 and 8 Social Studies Teacher (BA in Judaic Studies and BS in Elementary Ed., Univ. of Minn.; graduate coursework in building classroom communities and middle school education at Hamline Univ.), is entering her 19th year at the Day School. Elly lived in Israel for five years and considers the experience formative in shaping her outlook and values. She loves to travel, meet people and enjoy new adventures. Elly has visited 34 states and has her sights set on the remaining 16. She has a passion for the political process and has worked as a volunteer on a number of local and national races.
Tim Broms, Grade 7 Science and Grades 6, 7, & 8 Math Teacher (BS in business, Univ. of Minn.) made a career transition last year, having worked in the business world for 25 years where—in addition to running his own three businesses—he worked in adult education. Tim travels extensively and recently participated in a mission to Africa in which he helped to build a grade school. He collects elephants (not live) and has a passion for traveling and cooking. He and his wife live in Plymouth and they have two grown children.
Davida Cytron, Grade 7 and 8 Math Teacher (BA in History and Hebrew, University of Wisconsin, Madison; MA in Early Adolescent Education, Bank Street College of Education) is thrilled to be back for her second year at the day school. In addition to teaching 7th and 8th grade math, she will be serving as an advisor in the Upper School. Prior to coming to HMJDS, Davida taught fourth grade at Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day School in Chicago, and then took a six year break from teaching to raise her two children, Nina and Levi. In her spare time, Davida enjoys reading, doing yoga and cooking.
Daniel Ettedgui, Grade 7 Judaic Studies Teacher (BS in Education, Univ. of Minn.) has worked with Jewish children and teenagers (ages 8-18) at the Minneapolis Talmud Torah. He studied Hebrew at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and is currently a graduate student at Gratz College of Philadelphia. Danny has also served as Department Head of Talmud Torah's Beit Midrash and was Saturday morning Program Director at Sharei Chesed Synagogue.
Rani Halpern, Grade 7 and 8 Visual Art Teacher (BA, Univ of Michigan, Masters degree, Washington University) brings extensive experience teaching visual arts at the Twin Cities Jewish Middle School. She is a well-known local freelance artist specializing in ketubot and papercutting. She was a finalist for a Bush Artist Fellowship this year.
Nancy Joseph-Goldfarb, Grade 7 and 8 Language Arts Teacher (BA, Brown University; MA in ESL and course work for PhD in Curriculum and Instruction, Univ. of Minn.) taught language arts at the Twin Cities Jewish Middle School prior to joining the Day School. She has taught English literature; reading, writing, speaking and study skills to new immigrants and second-language students at the Univesity of Minnesota; and teacher preparation courses at Hamline University and the University of Minnesota. She has also administered language and literature programs at the University of Minnesota and at Hamline University.

Claire Avitabile, Performing Arts Specialist, (BA Theatre Arts from Smith College) is excited to join the Day School specialist team this year. Claire is currently the Director of Performing Arts at the Sabes JCC, and brings nearly a decade of teaching and directing experience to her new classroom with 7th and 8th graders. In New England, Claire worked with students at Yale University, Hopkins Academy, Smith College, and Amherst Regional High School, and since her move to Minneapolis in 2005 Claire has taught with Youth Performance Company, the Sabes JCC, and for Stages Theatre Company’s Acting Conservatory. In early 2006, Claire founded the 20% Theatre Company—a company that aims to produce modern work by female playwrights, and which has received recent local and national acclaim. When not onstage, backstage, or in the classroom, Claire enjoys relaxing with her family (which includes three cats!), exploring new restaurants, and road trips!
Beth Bowerman, Grades 7 and 8 Spanish Teacher (BA in Social Studies,, University of Wisc.-Milwaukee) has taught Spanish at Heritage Christian Academy, Carondelet, St. Elizabeth Seton, and St. Charles Borreameo Schools as well as Meyer Lutheran High School and Chapel Hill Academy.
Juli Gordon Olson, Technology Teacher (BS in Elementary Ed./Minor in Library and Information Science, Univ. of Wisc., MA Education, St. Mary’s Univ.), is extremely excited to be back for her third year on the specialist team. Prior to coming to the Day School, Juli taught third, then sixth grade in the Wayzata schools before enjoying nine-years at an educational materials company where she developed supplemental educational materials for children ages 3–14. Her Master’s project focused on Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences and developing a website relating to the topic. Juli looks forward to finding more new and exciting ways to integrate classroom curricula and technology. She lives in Maple Grove with her husband Dave and daughters, Adeline and Quinn.
Jesse Jacobson, Physical Education Teacher (BS in Physical Education, St. Cloud State University)to our Physical Education faculty. has worked in Elk River and in the Anoka-Hennepin and Osseo school districts. He has extensive experience working with a broad range of special needs students. In addition to his classroom work, Jesse will use his experience as a basketball and baseball coach to coach some of our Upper School teams.
Kelly Lindquist, Physical Education Teacher (BS in Developmental Adaptive Physical Education, St. Cloud State Univ.; BS in Municipal Recreation, Mankato State Univ.; Water Safety Instructors Certificate, American Red Cross), begins his fourth year at the Day School. Previously Kelly taught developmental adaptive physical education for nine years in the Eden Prairie school district. He has coached swimming and diving for 20 years and sat on the judges’ panel for the Minnesota State High School League for 16 years. Kelly and his wife, Kim, have three children, Rose, Madeline and Joe.
Aimee Orkin, Art Teacher (BA in Art, Univ. of Wisc.; AS in Architectural Drafting, Mpls. Technical Institute; MFA in Scenic Design, Brandeis Univ.), is beginning her 14th year at the Day School. She enjoys inspiring students, adults, and children throughout the community to create and learn a process to design. Aimee’s murals can be seen at Mount Zion, Brookview Animal Hospital, the Shoe Zoo, the Minnesota Zoo, the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, Sonny’s Ice Cream, Adath Jeshurun’s Gan Shelanu, Sabes JCC’s Early Childhood Center and many residential interiors. Her artwork has recently been shown at the University of Minnesota Larsen Gallery, The First Presbyterian church Art Gallery and will be at Adath Jeshurun in a group women’s art exhibit on the theme of Neshama, the Jewish soul. Aimee and her husband have two daughters enrolled at the school.
Catherine Orkin Oskow, Librarian (BA in English and American Literature, Brandeis Univ.; MA in Professional Writing, USC; Secondary English Teaching Certificate, Univ. of St. Thomas; coursework at St. Cloud State Univ. in Information Media), is beginning her 12th year at the Day School. Previously, she taught English and reading for 10 years at Inver Grove Heights Middle School, where she also founded and advised an award winning literary and arts magazine. Cathi writes fiction, screenplays, newspaper articles, children’s stories, and poetry. She is a member of the National and Minnesota Societies of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and the Minnesota Screenwriters’ Workshop, and has won state and national awards for her own writing. She is currently working on the rewrite and marketing of both a screenplay and a children’s book. Cathi also breeds and shows world-class Canaan Dogs, the only breed originating from Israel. Cathi loves the combination of books, children, and Jewish community that are part of being the librarian. Cathi and her husband are the proud parents of two Day School graduates.
David Shaw, Music Teacher (B.A. in Music Ed., Western Illinois Univ.; M.A. in Ed. Administration, Univ. of St. Thomas), is beginning his eighth year at the Day School, bringing 24 years of experience to the school. David has advanced training in the Orff method of teaching, as well as in the Kodály and Dalcroze music approaches. He serves as a member of the Day School Leadership Team where he has been extensively involved the accreditation process for our school with the Independent Schools Association of the Central States. He was the specialist team leader for six years and is sharing the position of general studies curriculum coordinator with Christine Yussen.
Victoria Thor, Art Teacher & Communications Coordinator – Leadership Team (BA Magna cum Laude, Univ. of Minn. in Art History & Studio Arts, minors in Jewish Studies and Spanish), is in her ninth year at HMJDS. She is the art teacher for grades three and four; fifth and sixth grade art electives; sixth grade art history and 7/8 art. Vic also coordinates HMJDS’s Art Adventure program, an art appreciation and history program in conjunction with the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. She is particularly interested in integrating art with other areas of study such as science and math. Beyond children and art, she is interested in travel, gardening, reading, flamenco/Latin music and Torah study opportunities at Beth El synagogue. Vic is the proud parent of two HMJDS alumni, Josef, junior at Indiana University, and Lily, a freshman at Rhode Island School of Design. Her family also includes husband, Marty Harris, a professional illustrator and graphic designer, and two adopted retired racing greyhounds. Vic also serves on the Board of Directors’ of the Alexander Muss High School in Israel Program and the Louis Herman Israel Experience Scholarship Fund. Vic also chairs the Sabes JCC Gallery committee.

Sara W. Bernstein, Hebrew Resource Teacher (BA in Theater, minor in Hebrew, Univ. of Minn.; BA in Jewish Letters, MA in Education and Administration, Univ. of Judaism; related coursework in Special Ed. and Second Language Ed., Brain Research, Multiple Intelligences and Learning Styles), has been at the school since 1992. After graduating from the University of Judaism in Los Angeles, Sara held positions with the Jewish Community Centers Association of Greater Los Angeles, taught in the LA public schools, and worked at the Bureau of Jewish Education directing two programs for eighth and ninth grade students. She enjoys helping children discover they can succeed—even when it is difficult!
Lisa Bottolene, Upper School Resource Teacher (BS in Elementary Ed., St. Cloud State Univ, MA Education, St. Mary’s Univ.), is beginning her sixth full year as a teacher at the Day School. She is very excited about her new role. Lisa is married to Scott, and has a daughter named Ava, and recently added twins to the family. Vinnie and Florie were born in July. In her free time, Lisa enjoys spending time with family and friends, playing games, taking her dogs for walks, watching sporting events, and playing at the lake. Lisa loves learning, and is always looking for ways to improve her teaching. She is very excited for her new role as Diversity Coordinator as well. Something interesting about Lisa? She and Scott went to highschool together, but did not date until 10 years later. Lisa looks forward to growing and changing with the school over the upcoming years.
Michael Brown School Resource Teacher (BA in Sociology, University of Ill.; Elementary Ed. 1-6, Learning Disabilities and Emotional Behavioral Disorder Licensures, Colorado and Minnesota; MA in Learning Disabilities, Mankato State Univ.; Certificate in Gifted Ed., Hamline Univ.), is beginning his 16th year at the Day School. Michael likes being a valued asset of the community, helping children with special needs, and teaching chess to kindergarten classes. Proud father of two, ages 23 and 13, and enjoys hiking, biking and canoeing.
Jonathan "Yoni" Bundt, Upper School Counselor (BA in Child Psychology and Jewish Studies, Univ. of Minn.; Masters Degree, in Counseling Psychology from the Adler Graduate School; PhD course work in organizational development and training, Univ. Minn He is board certified in crisis response & traumatic stress and is a as Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.) Yoni has been involved in the counseling field since1983 in a multiple settings doing assessment and treatment of children, teens and adults. In addition to a private counseling practice, he has served on the staff at Camp Ramah in Wisconsin as a staffing training and intervention specialist. In addition to his work at the Day School, Yoni works with multiple local law enforcement agencies and state government on emergency response and preparedness. He is also adjunct faculty at The Adler School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, Il. Yoni resides in Minneapolis with his lovely wife Debra and two boys who both attend the Day School.
Char Kucera, Lower School Resource Teacher (BA in Elementary Ed., minor in Psychology, College of St. Catherine; L.D certification, Bethel College), is beginning her eighth year with the Day School. Char enjoys working with special needs students and sees their progress as a rewarding experience. When not at school, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Jim, reading, working out, gardening, traveling, and socializing with friends.
Jen Lewin, Lower and Upper School Resource Teacher (BA in Elementary Education, American University; MA in Special Education, University of St. Thomas; MN Teaching License in Elementary Education 1-6, Learning Disabilities K-12, and Emotional Behavioral Disorders K-12) is in her second role serving as a long term substitute at the Day School. Jen brings over ten years of experience as an elementary and special education teacher. She has taught in the Osseo school district, at Groves Academy and was the Executive Director of the Whole Learning School. In the Jewish Community, Jen has served on the JCC Inclusion committee, Federation Special Needs Task Force, as well as starting Inclusion programs at Temple Israel, and Shir Tikvah Hebrew and Religious schools. Jen is excited to be back on the Day School faculty, as well as being a parent to three kids, Max, Simon and Devra, in the school.
Gay Rosenthal, Staff Psychologist (BA Magna Cum Laude in Psychology, Washington Univ., St. Louis; MA in Educational Psychology, Univ. of Minn.; Licensed Psychologist, State of Minn.; Nationally Certified School Psychologist; Certificate in Clinical Hypnosis, Externship in Marriage and Family Therapy, Family Therapy Institute, St. Paul), is beginning her 21st year at the Day School. She is also a psychologist in private practice, where she works with children, adolescents, adults, and families. She is a Family Law Mediator, Court Appointed Parenting Consultant, and a Qualified Neutral on the Minnesota State Supreme Court Roster. Her perspective in working with families is developmental and her approach eclectic. Her current interest is in family and organizational process. She values her relationship with the students, families, and staff at the Day School and is appreciative for her role in the community. Gay embraces the learning and teaching opportunities afforded in that role. Along with her husband Jules, she enjoys grandparenting their three grandchildren, ages 5 years, 2 years, and 11 months. Reading, photography, travel, and spending time with friends are near the top on her list of relaxing activities.

Harry Adler, Upper School Director (BA and ME University of Virginia; Post Graduate Education Program, University of St Thomas), is beginning his second year at the Day School after eleven years at the Twin Cities Jewish Middle School (TCJMS) and the Talmud Torah of St Paul (TTSP). He moved into the education field after fourteen years of business experience in engineering, finance and management. After several experiences in Minneapolis Public Schools while completing a licensure program, he taught math and science to third and fourth graders at the Talmud Torah of St Paul. He then began his involvement at TCJMS where he served initially as a science and math teacher to 7th and 8th graders. As his ten years at TCJMS progressed, he added on administrative roles taking on the Principal role for the 2006-2007 school year. Harry lives in Minneapolis with his wife, two children and several pets. He looks forward to an exciting year.
Ofer Alphabet, Information Technology Director (BS, Univ. of Tel Aviv with a major in Management Information Systems), is beginning his seventh year working with HMJDS and the entire Barry Family Campus. Originally from Israel, he was a Captain in the Israel Defense Forces Intelligence Division. Ofer came to Minnesota in 1985 where he owned a computer consulting company and physical therapy clinics. After selling his companies, Ofer wanted to be more in touch with the Jewish community and came to work at the Campus. Ofer and his wife, Pam, are the proud parents of two daughters, Taylor (a 3rd grader at HMJDS) and Sydney.
Bat Sheva Berman, Hebrew Coordinator (Teaching degree, Teacher’s Seminar), is beginning her ninth year at the Day School. After high school, she served in the army for two years where she planned youth programs in development towns. She taught Hebrew and directed all holiday programs at Torah Academy for 21 years before coming to the Day School. Bat Sheva lives in St. Louis Park with her husband and three children. She is the winner of the Mann Jewish Educator of the Year Award and Grinspoon - Steinhardt Award for Excellence in Jewish Education. Bat Sheva developed the curriculum for Kol Ivrit, a new, highly successful Hebrew immersion camp for students entering grades one to four, run jointly by the Day School and the Sabes JCC.
Jill Blustin, Administrative Assistant (CPA; BS - Accounting, Univ. of Minn.), is beginning her 2nd year working at the Day School and her 12th year as a Day School parent. Jill previously worked at Deluxe Corporation for 7 years as a Corporate Accounting Analyst, Accounts Receivable Manager and as a team member on a Business Architecture/Shared Services Design Team implementing SAP Software. Prior to that, Jill worked at Grant Thornton for 5 years as an auditor. Jill and her husband Sholly have two children: Sam, who is a Day School graduate and is now a junior in high school, and Talor, who is currently in 5th grade at the Day School.
Susan Divine, Finance and Operations Director (Business Administration-Accounting, Univ. of Minn.; CPA), is beginning her 16th year at the Day School. Susan previously worked at Coopers and Lybrand LLP (now Pricewaterhouse Coopers), first as an auditor then as a tax advisor specializing in non-profits and fiduciary tax work. Susan enjoys brisk walks along the lake and an exciting game of Mah Johngg.
Andrea “Drea” Johnson, Development Assistant (Diploma in Office Administration, Office Services, KRS Computer Business School), joined the Day School seven years ago, and now has a total of ten years working in an office environment. Drea enjoys working with the students and feels that she is part of the close Day School faculty family. She enjoys having this opportunity to be a part of the school’s growth and feels she is helping to contribute to the diversity of the community campus.
Randy Kustanowitz, Substitute Coordinator originally hails from New York. He has been in the Twin Cities since 1984. He went to the Hebrew Academy of Suffolk County in New York as a child and sent his daughter to the Day School. His background is in Minneapolis public schools as a substitute teacher. He lived in Israel for six months on Kibbutz Hazorea and participated in the ULPAN program.
Dr. Ray Levi, Head of School (A.B. Oberlin College; M.A. in Education, Claremont Graduate School; PhD in Music Education, Case Western Reserve Univ., focused on literacy development and original language and music composition by young children), is beginning his tenth year at the Day School. Dr. Levi came from Ohio, where he was the Head of the Agnon School, Cleveland’s Jewish Community Day School, for seven years. He is a Mentor on the faculty of the Day School Leadership Training Institute (DSLTI) an Avi Chai funded program at Jewish Theological Seminary preparing aspiring leaders for Jewish Day Schools. Immediate past chair of the Heads Council of the Minnesota Association of Independent Schools (MAIS), he serves on the Executive Committee of RAVSAK, the Jewish Community Day School Network, and is on the Board of the Council for Spirituality & Ethics in Education (CSEE). Dr. Levi is a past member of the Board of Governors of the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS) and the Editorial Board of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). In addition to many years of classroom teaching in the primary grades and as a middle school advisor, he has been an adjunct professor of Education at John Carroll University (Cleveland), a director of special curriculum projects at University School, and a staff development consultant for the Institute for Educational Renewal. He and his wife Ginny are the parents of two grown daughters.
Aaron Lichtov, Marketing Director, is beginning his third year at the Day School. An avowed “grammar nerd,” he enjoys the opportunity to learn some Hebrew while working on our publications. Aaron and his wife (a public school teacher) just bought their first house, in the Longfellow neighborhood of Minneapolis. They enjoy cooking, gardening, reading science fiction, and outdoor activities with their two Border Collies, Snuffy and Helo.
Abbe Gordon Payton, Admissions & Outreach Director (BA in Journalism, Univ. of Minn.), is beginning her eighth year at the Day School. Her professional experience is in public relations, marketing, advertising, sales, publishing, and management. She particularly enjoys working with prospective and new parents, helping to integrate them into our vibrant, growing school community. Abbe, a Florence Melton Adult Mini-School graduate, has served on an ISACS (Independent Schools Association of The Central States) accreditation team and presented multiple times at the PEJE (Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education) Assembly. Abbe and her husband have four children: two are Welsh terriers, one is a Day School graduate and one is a current Day School student.
N. Melegari (Mel) Newman, Staff & Student Services Coordinator, Lower School Administrative Assistant (BS, Communication Arts-major in Theater & Dance, minor in Music, Univ. of Wisc.), is beginning her 13th year at the Day School. She came to the Day School because she decided that facilitating the education of children (our future) was much more important and rewarding. Mel and her husband, Scott, have three children. She also sings in the praise-and-worship band her husband leads at their church. She highly values the cross-spiritual enlightenment she gains by working within this community.
Robert Portnoe, Judaic Studies Director; Grade 5 Judaic Studies and Geometry Teacher (BA and MA in History, Univ. of Penn.; BS in Economics, Univ. of Penn. Wharton School; Juris Doctor, National Law Center of George Washington Univ., Washington DC; coursework toward MA in Ed., Univ. St. Thomas), is beginning his 15th year at the Day School. He has been involved in teaching Jewish education to Twin-Cities first-graders through adults. Rob spent part of the past three summers studying at the Shalom Hartmann Institute in Jerusalem. He currently teaches adult education for Congregation Darchei Noam. Rob is a member of the Educational Leadership Team and Administration team.
Jeffrey Prottas, Development Director (BA in Psychology, MBA in Nonprofit Management, American Jewish University), is in his third year at the day school. Jeff brings extensive experience in Jewish agency work including positions with the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, the Sabes JCC, The JCC Association of North America and the JCC in Manhattan, the American Jewish University and the JCCs of Greater Los Angeles. He has a passion for building community and has been committed to Jewish education for 20 years. Besides his work in the community, Jeff is an avid sports enthusiast, enjoys the theater, music, time outdoors and spending quality time with his family. He lives in Golden Valley with his wife Dana (also a teacher) and four-year-old daughter, Ayelet.
Helen Siegel, Lower School Director (BA and MSEd, Queens College, City Univ. of New York), is beginning her 19th year at the Day School.. She has enjoyed a wide range of teaching experiences in three different states, including over 14 years in public education in New York City. She has taught ESL, Spanish, junior high school English and more. Always involved in Jewish education as a supplementary school Hebrew and Sunday school teacher, Helen joined the Day School faculty as an opportunity to integrate general education with Hebrew and Jewish studies. At the Day School Helen served as a third grade teacher and Division Coordinator for grades 3-6, and now begins her sixth year as a Day School administrator. She has served on an accreditation team for ISACS and is a member of the JCRC’s Speaker’s Bureau, educating the broader community about the Holocaust. As a master/mentor teacher for adult distance learners, she worked with local Jewish educators in the Gratz College Covenant Foundation’s Jewish Education Certificate program. She completed Harvard Graduate School of Education’s Principal’s Institute in the summer of 2005, studied in the Nishma and Na’aseh professional development seminar on prayer during the 2007-2008 school year and participated in a seminar on mentorship this summer. As a trained Asset Champion for St. Louis Park’s Children First initiative, she is a liaison to the wider community in her support of all students. She looks forward to another exciting year working with the growing number of students, families, and faculty in the outstanding program at the Day School.
Ethan Tarshish, Admissions Assistant (Interdepartmental degree in Film Studies, Jewish Studies, and Writing, Univ. of Minn.), is back for his fourth year at the Day School (his 10th year if you count when he was a student). A Day School alumnus, he has also worked closely with the Jewish community while acting as Advocate for Temple Israel’s Na’aseh V’nishma program for the past 10 years. Besides his involvement with the students at Temple Israel, he regularly videotapes Temple programs. A self proclaimed “Comic book aficionado,” Ethan brings his love of reading and storytelling to the Day School, injecting adventure and excitement into any given day. Ethan enjoys books, films, filmmaking, writing, and playing dodge ball with his lovely wife Julie (Tzipporah) Tarshish, and cat (Clark Kat).
Rabbi David Wirtschafter (B.A. English Literature, Brandeis Univ: M.A., Rabbinic Ordination H.U.C.-J.I.R.) was most recently the Senior Rabbi at Temple Beth Shalom in Santa Ana, CA. Originially from Minneapolis, he attended Temple Israel, Talmud Torah, and JCC sponsored camps as well as Jewish camps in the region. He has served congregations on Long Island and in northern California. Much of his work has focused on working with Youth Groups and teaching pre-b’nai mitzvah and high school students. He ahs served as Visiting Rabbi at Morasha Jewish Day School in Orange County where he helped guide the t’filah(Prayer) program and studied text with fifth and sixth graders. Helping communities to be inclusive and a love of Israel are two enduring passions. David is married to Shana Sippy, a writer and Jewish educator. They have two children, Zachariah (Grade 3) and Emanuelle (Kindergarten).
George Xenos, Database Manager & Operations Coordinator (B.A in Social Science from San Francisco State University with a certificate in Geographic Information Systems) George's professional background spans information management, data analysis, and operations. He has done it all from producing complex data-rich maps as a GIS specialist to managing day-to-day operations of a department in major investment firm and a non-commercial radio station. The vibrant, inclusive, and educational environment of the Day School makes this a perfect match for his values and interests. George's personal interests include gardening, music, outdoor activities with his son and going out for Ethiopian food with his wife as often as possible.
